"We can all benefit from getting outside the house a little more often, if only we could sum up the courage." During the Ted Talk "Why bother leaving the house?" Ben Saunders, an explorer couldn't stress to us enough about the importance of getting out to go see and experience all the world has to offer. He also expressed to us that we need to consider carefully how we spend the tiny amount of time we each have on this planet because, he believes the real meat of life is the actual going and doing and experiencing of places. He says "it's the juice we can suck out of our hours and days." From this I realized that in the end we only have one life so why regret missing out on all these great adventures and experiences we could have by staying in our comfort zone and never exploring the world around us. Due to these points he brought up, the main message I took away from Ben's talk was that we can only get real, true inspiration and growth in our lives by stepping away from what's comfortable and familiar and going to visit the unknown. In this Ted Talk being the explorer he is, he told us about how he became the youngest person to ever ski solo to the North Pole. Even though it was a hard and lonely trip he found it humbling to be able to experience the beauty of the far North to it's full potential. Although in his opinion, anyone could tell you about how amazing a place is but, you will never be able to fully experience it and get the same joy as they did if you don't leave your house. Ben explained that there is something very addictive about experiencing life at the peak of humanly possible, he made a reference to it being like a crack addiction, "you can't explain how truly good it is until you try it."
From this video it sparked a few questions in my mind about traveling and exploring this big world we live on. When Ben told us about how he decided to ski to he North Pole alone, it made me wonder what about this specific expedition and place caused him to choose it over others? There are so many amazing places around the world that I would love to visit but I know it's going to be hard to try and narrow it down when it comes to deciding where I will go. Another question that I had was how much money and time goes into carefully planning each expedition and trip, because I'd assume there would be some challenges they have to surpass in order to plan a successful adventure. Along with that thought, I also wondered what types of challenges people face during and when planning these trips, and what is required to work past them? The main reason I think people travel and explore is to see the world and experience the thrill it brings along but, I wonder what other reasons are behind why people travel? In this class I read the book "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld, one of the characters in this novel was curious about the unknown outside of her city, like the explorer Ben Saunders, she wanted to go explore and see what the world was like beyond what she was familiar to. This First text I chose began to give me a better understanding of my topic, as well as spark some questions in my mind for further investigation.
